HOW TO MEASURE

Measuring your pet's height correctly is important to ensure that you purchase the correct size flap.

The Step Over is the space between the ground and the bottom of the flap. It should be as low as possible for your pet to go through comfortable - as your pet gets older they may find it difficult to get through the door if the Step Over is too high!

1. Measure your pet's height - a) Stand your pet up straight; b) Find the tallest point on your pet's back: below the neck between the shoulder blades - also known as 'withers'. Measure the pet's height from the floor to this point.

2. The top of the flap should be at least 2.5cm-5cm taller than your pet's back - If the top of the flap is not tall enough, your pet may be hurting their back each time they go through the door.

3. The Step Over height should never be more than 1/3rd of your pet's height - a) Door mounts normally require a step over of at least 7.6cm so not too ruin the integrity of the door; b) The step over should be as low as possible for your pet to comfortably get through.

4. Measure pet door width - a) Open a door and have your pet walk through. Then measure the minimum amount of space needed to pass through the opening without squeezing. The door should be at least 5cm wider than your pet's widest point - usually shoulders or hips.

If your dog is a puppy, research the tallest average height for the breed and install a door appropriate for their adult size.
